A workbook with several tabs — one per month, region, or team — is often easier to share or import when each tab is its own file. InstantTools Split Sheet does exactly that: it turns every sheet/tab in your workbook into its own downloadable .xlsx file, entirely in your browser.
What this tool actually does
Split Sheet splits by tab, and only by tab. Upload a workbook with 3 sheets and you'll get 3 separate .xlsx files, one per sheet, each named after your original file plus the sheet name (e.g. report_Q1.xlsx, report_Q2.xlsx) — all packaged together into a single .zip download, so a workbook with many tabs doesn't run into your browser's limit on automatic multi-file downloads.
This tool does not split by row count or by unique values in a column (e.g. "one file per Department" from a single flat sheet) — if your data is all in one sheet and you need it partitioned by a column value, you'd need to filter and re-save manually in Excel/Sheets first, or split it into separate sheets before uploading here.
Why do this locally instead of uploading?
Most online "Excel splitters" require uploading your file to their servers, which is a real risk for payroll, sales, or customer data. Because the split happens in your browser's memory via SheetJS, your file never leaves your device.
How to split a workbook
- Drag and drop your
.xlsx,.xls, or.csvfile into the uploader. - Click "Run & Download."
- A single
.zipdownloads, containing one.xlsxfile per sheet/tab in the workbook.
Common use cases
- Break a workbook with monthly tabs into individual files for archiving.
- Hand each regional manager their own tab as a standalone file, without giving them the full workbook.
- Turn a multi-tab export from another tool into individual files for a bulk-import step that expects one file per sheet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the splitting preserve my headers?
Yes — each output file is a direct copy of one original sheet, so whatever header row was already in that sheet stays exactly as it was.
Can I split by row count or by a column's values instead of by tab?
Not with this tool — it only splits by existing sheet/tab. If you need row-count or column-value partitioning, do that step in Excel/Sheets first (e.g. filter and save each subset as its own sheet), then run the result through this tool.
Does this tool send any data to a server?
No. The entire splitting process happens in your browser's memory using the SheetJS library. Nothing is uploaded.
Does it support CSV and XLS formats?
Yes — .xlsx, .xls, and .csv are all accepted as input.
Is there a file size limit?
Free accounts can process files up to 100MB. Premium accounts can handle files up to 500MB, still entirely in the browser.
