Word to PDF (Text-Only)

Extract the text content of a .docx, .txt, or .md file into a simple PDF, fully offline.

Processing Mode

100% client-side via WebAssembly-compiled PDF libraries (pdf-lib, pdf.js, qpdf) — no file chunks are ever uploaded.

Privacy & Speed

Zero latency from uploads. Nothing you drop or paste here is sent to a server.

Local Hardware

PDF parsing and re-encoding run as compiled WebAssembly on your device's CPU — no server-side conversion queue.

This tool is a lightweight, text-only converter, and it's worth being upfront about exactly what that means before you upload something formatting-heavy. It reads the raw text out of a .txt, .md, or .docx file, reflows it into simple paragraphs, and lays that text onto PDF pages with a single default font. It does not render your original layout — no fonts, no images, no tables, no headers/footers, no page breaks from the source document carry over. If you need a byte-for-byte visual copy of a Word document (exact fonts, embedded images, table layouts), this tool is not that yet; it's built for getting the words out of a document into a portable, read-only file quickly.

What actually happens to a .docx file

A .docx is a ZIP archive containing an XML description of the document. This tool unpacks that archive, reads the raw text nodes out of word/document.xml, and discards everything else — styling, images, tables, embedded objects, headers and footers. The result is your document's text content, re-paragraphed and re-flowed into a plain PDF using a single default typeface. Legacy .doc files (the pre-2007 binary Word format) aren't supported at all — only .docx, .txt, and .md.

When this is genuinely useful

Stripping formatting isn't always a downside — for a lot of real tasks, the text is the entire point:

  • Turning a plain-text draft or Markdown README into a shareable, print-ready PDF
  • Getting the readable content out of a .docx you were sent, without needing Word or Google Docs installed
  • Producing a simple, universally-readable PDF from notes where visual formatting doesn't matter

When you need something else

If the document has tables, images, multiple columns, custom fonts, or precise page layout that has to survive the conversion — a bank statement template, a designed brochure, a resume with visual structure — this converter will flatten all of that into plain reflowed text. For that case, exporting directly to PDF from Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice (all of which do full layout-preserving rendering) will get you a far more faithful result.

Common uses

  • Converting a plain-text or Markdown draft into a PDF for sharing
  • Extracting readable text from a .docx without opening a word processor
  • Producing a quick, formatting-free reading copy of a longer document

FAQ

Does it preserve images, tables, or fonts from the original document?

No — this is a text-only conversion. Images, tables, custom fonts, and page layout from the source file are not carried over; only the raw text content is extracted and re-flowed into a plain PDF.

Does it support the older .doc format?

Not currently — only .docx, .txt, and .md files are accepted.

Is my document uploaded to a server?

No. The .docx archive is unpacked and the PDF is generated entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Will this ever support full layout-preserving conversion?

It's a real limitation we're aware of. For now, if layout fidelity matters, exporting to PDF directly from your word processor will give a more accurate result than this tool.
