Format Converter

Convert a single image between JPG, PNG, and WebP, processed locally.

Processing Mode

100% client-side via the browser's native Canvas API — no file chunks are ever uploaded.

Privacy & Speed

Zero latency from uploads. Nothing you drop or paste here is sent to a server.

Local Hardware

Image resizing and pixel operations run through your browser's hardware-accelerated Canvas rendering — no upload queue to wait on.

Every image format is really a trade-off between compression efficiency, browser/OS support, and whether it can represent transparency — and picking the wrong one for the job is the most common reason a "simple" image conversion goes wrong. If what you're actually trying to do is remove a background or enlarge an image rather than change its file type, see Removing a Background Without AI for the right tool for each job.

What this tool actually does

Drop or select one image (JPG, PNG, WebP, or GIF), pick an output format (JPEG, PNG, or WebP), adjust the quality slider if the output is JPEG or WebP, and convert. This processes one image at a time — there's no batch/multi-file mode here.

What each output format actually trades off

  • JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photographs — it has no transparency channel, and re-saving a JPG repeatedly compounds quality loss each time.
  • PNG is lossless and supports transparency, at the cost of noticeably larger file sizes for photographic content — it's the right choice for graphics, screenshots, and anything needing a transparent background, not for photos where file size matters.
  • WebP is a modern format with better compression than JPG/PNG at equivalent visual quality, and supports transparency — output WebP files from this tool are lossy (controlled by the same quality slider as JPG), not the lossless WebP variant.

Quality settings only apply to lossy outputs

The quality slider affects JPEG and WebP output, since both use lossy compression where you're trading file size against visual fidelity — pushing quality too low introduces visible blocking artifacts, especially around sharp edges and text. PNG output has no quality setting because it's lossless by definition.

What it doesn't support

  • HEIC (the format iPhones save photos as by default) is not supported as input. If your browser can't decode a file you drop in, clicking "Convert" will show an error rather than silently producing nothing.
  • AVIF, TIFF, and BMP are not offered as output formats — only JPEG, PNG, and WebP.
  • No batch mode. Converting several images means running this tool once per image.

Common uses

  • Converting a WebP image from the web into PNG or JPG for software that doesn't support WebP yet
  • Producing a JPG version of a PNG screenshot to shrink it for email or upload limits
  • Adding transparency support to a photo by converting JPG to PNG (the transparency itself still has to come from somewhere — this doesn't remove a background, see Background Remover for that)

FAQ

What formats are supported?

Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF (limited by what your browser can decode — HEIC is not supported). Output: JPEG, PNG, WebP.

Can I batch convert multiple images at once?

Not currently — this tool processes one image at a time. Run it again for each additional image.

When should I use PNG instead of JPG?

Whenever you need transparency, or the source is a graphic/screenshot rather than a photograph — PNG's lossless compression preserves sharp edges and text far better than JPG's photo-tuned compression.

Does converting a JPG to PNG improve its quality?

No — converting to a lossless format doesn't recover detail already lost to prior JPG compression, it just stops further loss from happening going forward.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser via the Canvas API; the file never leaves your device.
