Smart Images

OCR (Text Recognition)

Transform scans or photos into editable text using the local OCR engine.

Processing Mode

100% client-side via the browser's native Canvas API — no file chunks are ever uploaded.

Privacy & Speed

Zero latency from uploads. Nothing you drop or paste here is sent to a server.

Local Hardware

Image resizing and pixel operations run through your browser's hardware-accelerated Canvas rendering — no upload queue to wait on.

Turning a photo of a printed page or a screenshot of an error message into editable text usually means either retyping it by hand or trusting a cloud OCR service with the image. This tool runs Tesseract.js — a real, WebAssembly-compiled OCR engine with a trained text-recognition model, not a simple pattern match — directly in your browser, so the image never needs to be uploaded to run the recognition. See Removing a Background Without AI for how this compares to the other Smart Images tools — OCR is the one that genuinely does use a trained model.

The Advantage of Local OCR Processing

Most online "image-to-text" converters require you to upload your personal documents—which often contain sensitive financial, medical, or legal data—to their backend servers. Our Zero-Storage architecture eliminates this privacy risk. By using high-performance client-side JavaScript (powered by the Tesseract.js library running in a WebAssembly (WASM) environment), we parse your images directly on your device.

  • Ideal for handling real production invoices, private IDs, and confidential internal reports that should never touch a cloud server.
  • Once the language models are loaded, our engine can perform character recognition even if you lose your internet connection.
  • Our engine utilizes trained language models for English, Portuguese, Spanish, and French, selectable right in the tool.
  • Your images never leave your browser, ensuring compliance with strict corporate IT security policies and global data protection laws like GDPR.

How it Works: Tesseract.js and WebAssembly

Traditional OCR tools require massive server clusters to handle the heavy mathematical computation of character recognition. Our tool utilizes WebAssembly, a low-level assembly-like language that allows us to run high-performance C++ based OCR engines directly in your browser's CPU at near-native speeds.

  1. The browser downloads a small "training model" for your chosen language.
  2. The engine analyzes the contrast and shapes of the pixels in your image.
  3. Patterns are matched against the neural network's database to identify letters, numbers, and symbols.
  4. The identified characters are joined into words and sentences, ready for you to copy.

How to Extract Text from Images (Step-by-Step)

Our interface is designed for surgical precision and ease of use:

  1. Drag and drop a JPG, PNG, or WebP image into the workspace area above.
  2. Choose the language of the text (English, Portuguese, Spanish, or French) so the engine loads the matching dictionary.
  3. Click "Run OCR Engine." You'll see a progress bar as recognition runs in your browser.
  4. The extracted text appears in the output panel — click the copy icon to copy it to your clipboard.

Strategic Use Cases for OCR Technology

  • Quickly extract table data from scanned invoices or receipts for import into your accounting software.
  • No more manually retyping long error logs or console messages from a client's screenshot. Just drop the image and copy the textual code.
  • Convert non-searchable PDF fragments or book photos into editable text for citation and analysis in your research papers.
  • Turn "image-only" text (like promotional flyers) into accessible formats for screen readers, ensuring your content is inclusive for all users.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which image formats are supported?

JPG, PNG, and WebP. BMP and TIFF aren't accepted by the uploader today — convert those to PNG first if needed. For the best results, use high-resolution images with clear lighting and minimal background noise.

Does this work with handwriting?

While our engine is highly optimized for printed characters (like those in books, documents, and screenshots), it can recognize clear, legible handwriting with varying degrees of success. Accuracy for cursive or messy notes will be lower than for printed text.

Does this tool send my data to any server?

Absolutely none. In accordance with our Zero-Storage philosophy, all image-to-text processing happens via the local JavaScript engine and WebAssembly in your browser session. Your sensitive scans and documents are never uploaded or logged.

Why is the first scan sometimes slower?

When you first use the tool, the browser needs to download the specific "Language Training Model" (a few MBs of data). These files are then cached on your device, making all future scans—even offline—incredibly fast.

Is there a limit on the number of images?

OCR counts as one task against the same daily limit as every other tool on InstantTools: 10 tasks per day on the free plan, unlimited on Premium. There's no separate or stricter limit specific to OCR.
