Quick Utils

Metadata Cleaner

Remove EXIF, XMP and author data from PDFs, photos or audio files.

Processing Mode

100% client-side via plain JavaScript running directly in this tab — there's no file to upload in the first place.

Privacy & Speed

Zero latency from uploads. Nothing you drop or paste here is sent to a server.

Local Hardware

Simple enough to run instantly in your browser's JavaScript engine — no WebAssembly or GPU needed for this one.

Photos and PDFs both carry more hidden data than most people expect — GPS coordinates and device model in a photo's EXIF block, author name and revision history in a PDF's metadata streams. This tool strips that out by rebuilding the file in your browser (redrawing images onto a canvas for photos, copying pages into a fresh document for PDFs) rather than editing metadata fields directly — the rebuild is what actually discards the hidden data, and it happens without uploading anything.

The Advantage of Local Metadata Cleaning

Most online "EXIF removers" require you to upload your files to their servers, where they are processed and potentially stored. This process itself exposes the very data you're trying to hide. Our Zero-Storage architecture eliminates this privacy risk. By using high-performance client-side JavaScript and Canvas APIs, we rebuild your images without the metadata headers directly on your device.

  • Ideal for whistleblowers, journalists, and privacy-conscious users who need to share images without revealing their location or identity.
  • Large images are cleaned in milliseconds without waiting for a server upload or deal with bandwidth constraints.
  • Automatically removes EXIF, IPTC, and XMP chunks from your images, leaving only the visual data.
  • Your files never leave your browser, ensuring compliance with strict corporate security policies and global privacy regulations.

How to Clean Metadata (Step-by-Step)

Our interface is designed for maximum security and simplicity:

  1. Drag and drop your photo (JPG, PNG, or WebP) or PDF into the uploader area above.
  2. Ensure you are on the "Metadata" cleaning mode within the utility panel.
  3. Click the "Clean Metadata" button. The tool will process the file's binary data locally.
  4. Click the "Download Cleaned" button to save the new version to your device.
  5. You can use our EXIF Viewer to confirm that all hidden tags have been successfully removed.

Strategic Use Cases for Privacy Protection

  • Clean your photos before posting them to various platforms to prevent strangers from identifying your home location or daily routines via embedded GPS tags.
  • Lawyers and consultants can strip "Author" and "Organization" tags from documents and images before sending them to opposing counsel or clients.
  • When selling items on platforms like eBay or Facebook Marketplace, ensure your product photos don't include home location data.
  • Protecting sources by ensuring that leaked or shared visual evidence cannot be traced back to a specific camera or location.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of metadata are removed?

Our cleaner targets all standard metadata headers, including EXIF (camera settings, GPS), IPTC (copyright, captions), and XMP (editing history). We effectively re-encode the image data to ensure only the pixels are preserved.

Does cleaning metadata reduce image quality?

For PNG, the re-encode is lossless — pixel data is preserved exactly. For JPEG and WebP, the image is redrawn to canvas and re-compressed at 95% quality; this is technically a fresh lossy compression pass, but at that quality level the visual difference from the original is negligible for virtually all use cases.

Does this tool send any data to any server?

Absolutely none. In accordance with our Zero-Storage philosophy, the entire stripping process occurs within your browser's local memory. Your original files and the cleaned versions never touch our backend infrastructure.

Does it work for PDFs?

Yes — PDFs are supported today, not just images. The tool rebuilds the PDF by copying every page into a fresh document, which drops most metadata streams (author, creation tool, revision history) in the process. This is a best-effort strip rather than a guaranteed byte-level scrub of every possible metadata field a PDF can carry, but it removes what typically matters for privacy.

Can I batch clean multiple images?

Currently, the tool processes one image at a time to ensure maximum stability and security within the browser's memory limits. You can quickly process sequential images by dragging a new file into the workspace immediately after downloading the previous one.
