Generating a QR code is simple in principle, but plenty of free generators route the destination URL through their own redirect/tracking layer first. This tool encodes the QR code with the qrcode library directly in your browser — the link or text you enter never passes through a server — and can also scan an existing QR code back into text using the browser's native BarcodeDetector API where it's available (Chromium-based browsers; Safari and Firefox don't implement it yet).
The Advantage of Local QR Code Generation
Most online "QR makers" require you to enter your data into their servers, where it may be logged, analyzed, or used for tracking. Our Zero-Storage architecture eliminates this privacy risk. By using high-performance client-side JavaScript (powered by the qrcode.js library), we render your custom codes directly on your device.
- Ideal for generating sensitive Wi-Fi access codes, private contact cards (vCards), and internal company deep-links.
- Unlike "freemium" tools, our generator produces a clean PNG asset with no scan limits and no forced branding.
- Adjust colors, size (100–600px), and error correction level in real-time and see the result update instantly before you download.
- Your encoded information never leaves your browser, ensuring compliance with strict corporate IT security policies and data protection laws.
Scanning a QR Code
This tool also reads QR codes, not just generates them: switch to the Scan tab, upload an image containing a QR code, and it decodes the raw text/payload encoded in it (a URL, Wi-Fi string, contact info, or anything else). Scanning uses your browser's built-in BarcodeDetector API rather than a bundled decoding library, which means it currently works in Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave) — Safari and Firefox don't support this API yet, so scanning won't work there until browser support catches up. Generation works in every modern browser regardless.
Understanding Error Correction Levels
One of the most powerful features of a QR code is its ability to remain scannable even if it is partially damaged or obscured. This is handled by Error Correction (ECC) levels:
- Best for digital screens where the code is always clear. It produces the "cleanest" looking code with the fewest dots.
- The industry standard. Ideal for general marketing materials, business cards, and flyers.
- Recommended for environments where the code might get slightly smudged or if you plan to print it on a textured surface.
- The highest level of protection. Use this if you plan to place a small logo in the center of the code or if the physical print might face significant wear and tear.
How to Generate a Custom QR Code (Step-by-Step)
Our interface is designed for surgical precision and creative flexibility:
- Type your URL (e.g.,
https://instanttools.org), plain text, or Wi-Fi configuration string into the input field above. - Use the color pickers to choose a Foreground Color (usually dark) and a Background Color (usually light) that match your brand's identity.
- Adjust the size slider (100–600px) and pick the appropriate Error Correction Level.
- Click "Download PNG" for the image file, or "Copy Data URL" to copy the raw PNG data URL string (not the image itself) for embedding directly in HTML/CSS.
Strategic Use Cases for QR Technology
- Generate a "Scan-to-Connect" QR code for your home or office guests, eliminating the need to manually type complex WPA2 passwords.
- Print high-res QR codes on posters, banners, and business cards to direct potential customers to your specific landing pages or app store links.
- Encode your full contact information into a single code that others can scan to instantly add you to their phone's address book.
- Create unique, scannable identifiers for event registration forms, digital tickets, or localized "check-in" stations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which types of content can I encode?
You can encode any plain text, including website URLs, email addresses, phone numbers, localized map coordinates, and even complex configuration strings for IoT devices.
What is the maximum character limit?
A standard QR code can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters, though we recommend keeping your content concise (especially for URLs) to ensure the code remains easy to scan at smaller physical sizes.
Does this tool send my data to any server?
Absolutely none. In accordance with our Zero-Storage philosophy, the entire generation process occurs within your browser's local memory using specialized JavaScript libraries. Your private URLs, Wi-Fi passwords, and contact details are never uploaded or logged.
Are there any "scan limits" or expiration dates?
None! Since you are downloading a static image file (PNG/SVG), the QR code is yours forever. It will never expire, and there are no limits on how many times it can be scanned.
Can I add my logo to the center?
Not directly in the tool — there's no built-in logo overlay. By using Level H error correction, you can manually place a small logo over the center of the downloaded PNG in any design tool without breaking the scannability.
Can I export as SVG instead of PNG?
Not currently — the generator only exports PNG. If you need a vector SVG for large-format printing, you'll need a different tool for that conversion step.
Does the scanner work in every browser?
No — scanning relies on your browser's native BarcodeDetector API, which is currently only available in Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera, Brave). It isn't supported in Safari or Firefox. QR code generation works everywhere; only scanning has this limitation.
