XML to JSON

Convert XML responses into JSON for APIs and spreadsheet work.

Processing Mode

100% client-side via SheetJS, a pure JavaScript spreadsheet engine — no file chunks are ever uploaded.

Privacy & Speed

Zero latency from uploads. Nothing you drop or paste here is sent to a server.

Local Hardware

Runs directly in the browser's JavaScript engine — light enough that most conversions finish before a spinner would even show.

It's worth understanding one specific limitation before you rely on this for anything API-related: XML has two distinct kinds of data — element text (<name>Alice</name>) and attributes (<user id="42">) — and this converter currently carries over element structure and text, but drops attributes entirely. If your XML relies on attributes for meaningful data (very common in API responses and config files — think <item id="1" status="active">), that id and status data won't appear anywhere in the JSON output.

What actually gets converted

Elements become JSON object keys, nested elements become nested objects, and repeated sibling elements (multiple <item> tags under the same parent) become a JSON array automatically. Leaf elements (ones with no child elements) become their text content as a string. This covers the structural part of XML-to-JSON conversion accurately — the gap is specifically attributes.

Why this matters for real API responses

A lot of real-world XML — SOAP responses, RSS/Atom feeds, many config formats — puts meaningful data in attributes, not just element text. If you convert <price currency="USD">29.99</price>, you'll get "price": "29.99" in the output, but the currency="USD" attribute is silently gone. Before trusting a conversion for anything you're piping into another system, check your source XML for attributes on the elements you actually care about — if there are none, the conversion is complete as-is; if there are, you'll need to add that data back manually for now.

Common use cases (with the attribute gap in mind)

  • Converting XML element structure and text content into JSON for scripts that don't depend on attribute data
  • Getting a readable JSON view of an XML document's element hierarchy for exploration
  • Bridging simple, attribute-free XML config files into JSON for Node.js or Python projects

FAQ

Are XML attributes included in the JSON output?

Not currently — only element structure and text content are converted. Attribute values (like id="1" in <item id="1">) are dropped, so check your source XML for attributes before relying on the output as a complete conversion.

How are repeated sibling elements handled?

Automatically grouped into a JSON array — multiple <item> elements under the same parent become an array of values rather than overwriting each other.

Is my data uploaded?

No. All parsing runs client-side in your browser. Your XML data never leaves your device.

Privacy

XML to JSON conversion runs 100% client-side. No data is transmitted to external servers.
