Where did the money go?
A budget says what you plan to spend; an expense tracker records what you actually spent, as you spend it. Logging each purchase takes seconds, and at the end of the month the summary shows exactly where the money went.
Two tabs
- Expenses — one row per purchase: Date, Category, Description, Paid with, Amount. Thirty-four rows are ready, four with examples, and the total is calculated at the bottom.
- Summary — each category with its total, calculated from the Expenses tab, plus a grand total.
The Summary tab ships with the categories Travel, Meals, Software, Office and Other. To use your own (Groceries, Rent, Fuel…), rename the category in the Summary tab and use exactly the same word in the Expenses tab; the totals follow the names.
Business or personal
For a business, log expenses here through the month and copy them into an expense report when you claim reimbursement. For personal finances, compare the Summary totals with the plan in the monthly budget.
FAQ
Why is a category total zero?
The name in the Expenses tab must match the Summary tab exactly ("Meals" and "meals " with a trailing space are different).
Can I add more categories?
Yes — add a row in the Summary tab with the new name and copy the formula from the row above.
How do I keep receipts with it?
Write a short receipt reference in the description, or photograph receipts and combine them later with Image to PDF.
