Fill an interactive PDF form and sign it, without printing anything
Many official forms — tax documents, permit applications, HR paperwork — are PDFs built with real, interactive form fields (technically called an AcroForm). Fill & Sign PDF reads those fields, gives you a simple sidebar to type into each one, lets you draw a signature, and exports the completed document — all inside your browser using the pdf-lib library.
What this tool needs to work
This tool fills existing form fields — it detects the AcroForm fields already built into the PDF and lists them in a sidebar for you to fill in. It does not let you click anywhere on the page to place new text, and it can't add fillable fields to a flat, non-interactive PDF (like a scanned document with no form structure). If you upload a PDF with no fields, you'll see a message telling you so instead of a form to fill — see Fillable vs. Non-Fillable PDF Forms for why that distinction exists and what to do about it.
If you need to add text anywhere on a flat PDF — not just into existing fields — use our Reorder & Delete PDF Pages or PDF Redactor tools for related but different page-level operations; this tool is specifically for AcroForm field-filling.
How signing actually works
The signature pad lets you draw your signature with a mouse or touchscreen — there's no option to upload a photo of a handwritten signature. After you save it, you choose where it goes: click anywhere on any page and the signature is placed there, and you can move it again before exporting. If the PDF already contains a signature field (the W-8BEN does, for example), the signature is placed inside that field automatically. One signature per document is supported today. Note that this is a drawn image of your signature, not a cryptographic digital signature — it is accepted for most everyday paperwork, but documents that require a certified e-signature need a dedicated service.
How to fill and sign a PDF
- Drag and drop a PDF that has interactive form fields into the workspace.
- Fill in each field listed in the sidebar. Each field shows the description built into the form (for example "5. Address (number, street, and apt. or suite no.)" on a W-9), and text fields, checkboxes and dropdown lists are all supported.
- Click "Draw Your Signature", draw it with your mouse or finger, then click on the page where it belongs.
- Click "Fill & Export" — your filled and signed PDF downloads instantly.
Common use cases
- Complete a tax form, permit application, or registration that was distributed as a fillable PDF.
- Fill in and sign an NDA, service agreement, or offer letter that already has form fields set up.
- Check boxes and type values into a structured intake form without printing it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I edit a PDF that is password protected?
Not directly — you'll need to remove the password first with our Unlock PDF tool, then fill and sign the unlocked file here.
What if my PDF doesn't have fillable fields?
This tool can only fill fields that already exist in the PDF. If your document is a flat scan or was exported without an AcroForm, this tool won't be able to add new fields to it.
Is my signature stored anywhere?
No. The signature you draw and the text you type are processed entirely in your browser's memory using pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded or stored on our servers.
What is the maximum file size?
Free accounts can process files up to 100MB. Premium accounts can handle files up to 500MB, still entirely in the browser.
